Economic Foundations

Assumptions the economic model rests on.

Draft: Written but unreviewed. Content may change substantially.

Retained from market economics

  • Private ownership
  • Price signals
  • Voluntary exchange
  • Entrepreneurial discovery
  • Return on productive risk

Rejected as necessary features

  • That extraction and production must be rewarded identically
  • That accumulated capital left idle is economically neutral
  • That price is a sufficient record of a transaction's effect
  • That negative externalities are adequately priced by default

Consequence

If price under-records a transaction's effect, then optimising for price optimises for the wrong target. Book IV (Intelligent Currency) is the proposed response.
